Public Transport Included in the Porto.CARD

1. Metro in Porto

The Porto Metro is a modern transportation system with six color-coded lines (A, B, C, D, E, F) serving both the city and its surrounding areas. It links key districts and suburban zones, and even the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is part of the network.

Current Metro Lines (2025):

  1. Line A (Blue): Estádio do Dragão – Senhor de Matosinhos
  2. Line B (Red): Estádio do Dragão – Póvoa de Varzim (coastal region)
  3. Line C (Green): Campanhã – ISMAI (north)
  4. Line D (Yellow): Hospital de São João – Vila d’Este
  5. Line E (Purple): Estádio do Dragão – Airport
  6. Line F (Orange): Fânzeres – Senhor de Matosinhos

A new line (Line H) is currently under construction.

Porto.CARD holders can use all Metro lines unlimited and free of charge.

By Metro to Matosinhos City Beach

The Metro takes you quickly and comfortably from the city centre to the popular Matosinhos beach – and it’s completely free for Porto.CARD holders.

  • Direct connection from the city center via Line A (Blue)
  • Travel time: approx. 30 minutes to Matosinhos Sul station
  • Only a short walk from the station to the beach
  • Perfect for adding a relaxing day by the sea to your city break
Matosinhos offers:
  • Wide, clean sandy beaches
  • Great conditions for swimming and surfing
  • Many cafés and seafood restaurants along the promenade

2. STCP Buses

STCP (Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto) operates 88 bus lines across Porto and the surrounding suburbs (as of 2025).

Porto.CARD holders can use all STCP buses unlimited and free of charge.

💡 Tip: Buses are a great complement to the Metro, especially for destinations not directly connected to a Metro line.

The bus network connects:

  • The historic old town and city center
  • The Ribeira district on the Douro River
  • Modern neighbourhoods such as Boavista or Campanhã
  • Surrounding municipalities around Porto

The Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is also connected by bus – via lines 3M, 601, 602 and 604.

3. CP Regional Trains

CP (Comboios de Portugal) operates several urban and regional train lines (“Comboios Urbanos do Porto”) within the Greater Porto area.

Included with the Porto.CARD:

  • Line to Paredes
  • Line to Lousado
  • Line to Vila das Aves
  • Line to Paramos

Additional benefit: Porto.CARD holders receive 10% discount on tourist train tickets to Aveiro, Braga, Guimarães, and Marco de Canavezes.

By Train to Espinho Beach

Espinho, located about 20 km southwest of Porto, is perfect for a half-day or full-day trip.

  • Direct connection with CP suburban trains (“Urbanos”) from São Bento Station
  • Journey time: approx. 30 minutes
  • Free of charge for Porto.CARD holders – included in the valid travel area
Highlights of Espinho:
  • Long, natural sandy beach
  • Popular weekly market (every Monday) – one of the largest in Portugal

Airport Transfer – From the Airport to the City Center with the Porto.CARD

Free transfer from the airport by Metro and bus for all Porto.CARD holders.

  • The Metro Line E (Purple) connects Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport directly to the city centre.
  • Travel time: around 30 minutes.
  • Bus connections: lines 3M, 601, 602 and 604 operated by STCP.

  • The Porto.CARD is valid for unlimited journeys on all included public transport during its period of validity.
  • Always validate your card before each trip – including transfers between Metro, bus, or train.
  • Only a correctly validated card is valid for travel.

Current Porto.CARD prices (including public transport):

1 day: €15
2 days: €27 (€13.50 per day)
3 days: €32 (€10.70 per day)
4 days: €41.50 (€10.40 per day)

The longer the validity period, the cheaper the price per day.

Children under 4 years travel free on public transport.

NOT Included in the Porto.CARD Public Transport Option

Not all transport services are covered by the Porto.CARD.
The most important exceptions are listed below:

❌ Funicular dos Guindais

  • The Funicular dos Guindais connects the Douro riverbank with the higher Praça do Batalha.
  • A convenient way to avoid Porto’s steep climbs between the lower and upper parts of the city.
  • Porto.CARD holders receive 25% discount on single rides (as of 2025).

❌ Historic Trams in Porto

  • Two nostalgic tram lines with wooden carriages operate through the old town and along the Douro River.
  • Especially popular among tourists exploring historic Porto.
  • Not included in the Porto.CARD public transport option!

❌ Teleférico de Gaia (Cable Car)

  • The Gaia Cable Car is technically part of the public network but not free with the Porto.CARD.
  • Porto.CARD holders receive 10% discount on tickets.
  • The line connects the Douro riverbank with the Jardim do Morro viewpoint in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Frequently asked questions – FAQ 2025

With your Porto.Card you can use the city bus of the STCP (Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto), various private bus lines and the total of 6 lines of the metro unlimited & free of charge.

In addition, you can use the suburban train of the Portuguese railway company CP on the routes to Paredes, Lousado, Vila das Aves and Paramos (Tren CP Porto Urbanos) free of charge.

      with the Porto.CARD you can use the suburban train ‘Linha de Braga’ to Lousado. You will need another ticket to your destination Vila Nova de Cerveira.

      if you buy the Porto card with transport, this transportation card is valid for all public transportation in Porto. This means that you can use it on all metro lines, all STCP buses, and urban trains until Lousado, Paredes, Vila das Aves and Paramos.

      On our pages we refer you to a booking portal where you can buy the Porto.CARD.
      At the moment the Porto.CARD is a physical card. However, a digital version is planned.
      You can find the latest information on the booking portal, to which we have provided a link.
